In English-speaking North America, the term "vacation" describes recreational trips, such as a short leisure trip or an overseas journey. People in Commonwealth countries use the term "holiday" to describe both time off work and a vacation or trip. "Vacation" can mean both staying at home and going somewhere.

Canadians often use "vacation" and "holiday" interchangeably to refer to a trip away from home or time off work. In Australia and the United Kingdom, "holiday" can refer to both a vacation and a public holiday.
